Interested in a Job in Robotics?

If you’re reading this, you’re probably interested in robotics. Congratulations, you’ve come to the right place! Robotics is a very fast-growing industry, with new and exciting fields popping up all the time. In this article, I’ll go over the three main fields in robotics and some sample careers within those.

So, what does a job in Robotics entail? We can explore that question by figuring out what you need to build a robot.

First of all, a body. Moving arms, bendable joints, hydraulics, these are all part of the physical body of a robot. In other words, the first kind of job in Robotics is one where you build the robot itself. It falls under the category of Mechanics.

The second component of every robot is electricity. Manipulating electrical current and working with wires makes up the second kind of Robotics job. These people work in Electrical Engineering.

The third and final piece of every robot is their software, or brain. This job includes lots and lots of coding, and working with computers. It’s known as Computer Science.

These three fields make up all of Robotics, and any job related to robots falls under one or two of these categories. So, what are some examples of these jobs that I won’t stop talking about?

Software Developing is a good example. This job fits into-- you guessed it-- Computer Science! Software Developers write instructions for the computer so it can understand commands. A software developer is the reason your computer knew what to do when you clicked on this article, for example.

Another discipline that combines two categories is a Robotics Technician. In this job, you would work with both mechanics and electric systems to maintain and repair your robots. Additionally, Robotics Technicians often collaborate with customers, or whoever is buying the robot.

So there you have it! Robotics, a diverse field full of potential. Some of that potential could be yours, if you put your mind to it. Stay curious!
